Mnemonic Shortcut Reference

Internalize Kdenlive's shortcuts through memory patterns, logical groupings, and mnemonics. Built for screencast creators who want zero-lookup speed.

Why Mnemonics Matter

Looking up a shortcut breaks your flow. A video editor who knows every shortcut works 3–5× faster than one who uses menus. This reference gives you the mental framework to remember — not just memorize.

The JKL Transport System

The most important shortcuts to internalize first:

J = Jog backward (rewind)
K = Kill playback (pause/stop)
L = Launch playback (play forward)

Memory: J is to the LEFT of K (going back)
L is to the RIGHT of K (going forward)
K is the CENTER anchor (stop)

Press L twice → 2x speed
Press L three times → 4x speed
Press J twice → 2x rewind
K always stops, no matter how fast you're going

The Tools Row: S, X, M, Esc

S = Selection (S for Select)
X = raZor (X marks the cut)
M = Move-all (M for Move with spacer)
Esc = Escape back to Selection

Memory: "S-X-M" left to right on keyboard
S → normal editing
X → cut mode
M → spacer/move mode
Esc → emergency exit to selection

Zone System: I and O

I = In point (beginning — I comes before O)
O = Out point (end — O comes after I)

Shift+I = jump to In point
Shift+O = jump to Out point

I/O → set zone
V = inVert to timeline (insert)
B = Blast overwrite (overwrite)

Memory: I-O is In-Out. Shift goes TO the point.
V is the most common insert (V-shaped funnel into timeline)
B is the Bomb — it overwrites!

Cut Operations: Shift Prefix Pattern

R = Razor action
Shift+R = cut single track at playhead
Ctrl+Shift+R = cut all tracks at playhead

Del = delete (leave gap — "D" is empty)
Shift+Del = eXtract delete (close gap — shift = extra power)

Z = Zone lift (leave gap — Z = lazy, leaves mess)
Shift+X = eXtract zone (close gap — X = precise)

Memory: Shift = "more powerful" version of the base action
Del vs Shift+Del = gap stays vs gap closed

Guide Navigation: Ctrl+Arrow vs Alt+Arrow

Ctrl+Right/Left = jump to next/previous GUIDE
(Ctrl = "controlled" structured position)

Alt+Right/Left = jump to next/previous SNAP POINT
(Alt = "alternate" any snap)

Memory:
Ctrl+Right = Chapter navigation (I chose where to go)
Alt+Right = Any edge navigation (nearest snap)

Track Selection Numbers

1-9 = select video track 1-9
(just the number — video is primary)
Alt+1 to 9 = select audio track 1-9
(Alt = "alternate" track type = audio)

A = Activate track as target
Shift+A = toggle ALL tracks active
Shift+T = Toggle track as Target

Memory: A = Activate, Shift = "all" modifier

Grouping: G Pattern

Ctrl+G = Group (G for Group)
Ctrl+Shift+G = Ungroup (Shift = undo the group)
Shift+G = Grab current item for keyboard move
(Shift+G = Grab, then arrow keys move it)
G alone = Guide (add marker)

Memory: G = Group/Guide/Grab
Ctrl+G = group clips
G alone = add Guide
Shift+G = Grab and move

Zoom: Ctrl+Scroll and Ctrl+Plus/Minus

Ctrl+Mouse Wheel = zoom in/out (most natural)
Ctrl++ = zoom in (keyboard only)
Ctrl+- = zoom out (keyboard only)
Ctrl+Shift+F = full screen app
F11 = full screen MONITOR

Memory: Ctrl = "control" the view scale
F11 = monitor full screen (function key = feature key)

Render and Save: Ctrl+Enter

Ctrl+S = Save (standard everywhere)
Ctrl+N = New (standard)
Ctrl+O = Open (standard)
Ctrl+Enter = Render (Enter = "go" / "produce output")

Memory: Enter = "do it" = render the video
Ctrl+Enter = "do it for real" = open render dialog

Titler Mnemonics

Alt+T = add Text (T for Text, Alt = in Titler context)
Alt+R = add Rect (R for Rectangle)
Alt+E = add Ellipse (E for Ellipse)
Alt+I = Insert image (I for Image)
Alt+S = back to Selection (S for Select)

Memory: Alt+first-letter-of-element-type
All Titler shortcuts use Alt prefix

Effect Keyframe Navigation

Alt+Left/Right = previous/next Keyframe
(Alt = "alternate" navigation mode)

MMB (middle-click) = reset parameter to default
(middle = neutral = default)

Double-click keyframe zone = add keyframe
Del on selected keyframe = remove keyframe

The "Ctrl+Shift+," Configuration Pattern

Ctrl+, → Not used
Ctrl+Shift+, → Configure KDENLIVE (app settings)
Ctrl+Alt+, → Configure SHORTCUTS (keyboard shortcuts)

Memory:
, = settings (comma = pause, settings = pause in workflow)
Ctrl+Shift+, = general settings
Ctrl+Alt+, = shortcut settings (Alt = "alternative" input)
