Timeline Navigation
The timeline is where you spend 80% of your editing time. Master its navigation before learning to cut.
Fast timeline navigation = fast editing. Use keyboard shortcuts for everything. The mouse is for placing and adjusting clips — the keyboard is for moving, playing, and seeking.

Playhead Control (Most Important)
The playhead is the vertical red line showing your current position.
Space → Play / Stop
J → Rewind (press again for faster: -1x, -2x, -4x...)
K → Pause (also stops J/L speed ramp)
L → Forward (press again for faster: 1x, 2x, 4x...)
Left → Step 1 frame back
Right → Step 1 frame forward
Shift+Left → Step 1 second back
Shift+Right → Step 1 second forward
Ctrl+Home → Jump to project start (frame 0)
Ctrl+End → Jump to project end (last frame)
Home → Jump to start of selected clip
End → Jump to end of selected clip
P → Align playhead to mouse cursor position
Learn J, K, L before anything else. Press L to play. Press K to stop. Press J to scan backward. Press L twice to play at 2x speed. This is how professional editors navigate hours of footage in minutes.
Scrolling and Panning
Horizontal scroll:
Mouse Wheel → Scroll timeline left/right
MMB (middle mouse) drag → Pan timeline continuously
Ctrl+LMB drag → Pan timeline continuously
Vertical scroll:
Shift+Mouse Wheel → Scroll tracks up/down
Zooming:
Ctrl+Mouse Wheel → Zoom in/out (centered on mouse)
Ctrl++ → Zoom in (keyboard)
Ctrl+- → Zoom out (keyboard)
Drag zoombar edges → Zoom in/out (bottom of timeline)
Zoom Levels Explained
Zoom out (wide view):
→ See entire 5-min screencast at once
→ Good for: overall structure, chapter review
Zoom in (detail view):
→ See individual frames
→ Good for: precise cut points, frame-accurate editing
Tip: Set a guide at 00:01:00 (1-minute mark) and 00:02:00 (2-minute mark) to keep your screencast within duration targets:
Move playhead to 01:00 position
Press G → adds a guide marker at 1:00
Move playhead to 02:00
Press G → adds guide at 2:00
Timeline Zone (In/Out Points)
The zone defines a range for playback, insert, or export:
I → Set Zone In (at playhead)
O → Set Zone Out (at playhead)
Shift+I → Jump to Zone In
Shift+O → Jump to Zone Out
Ctrl+Space → Play zone only (loops)
Ctrl+Shift+Space → Loop zone playback continuously
Shift+Z → Adjust zone to selected clips
Screencast use case:
1. Play your recording
2. Press I when the good section starts
3. Press O when it ends
4. Press Ctrl+Space → hear just that section
5. Press V → insert that zone into the timeline
Moving Between Guides
G → Add guide at playhead position
Ctrl+Right → Jump to next guide
Ctrl+Left → Jump to previous guide
Moving Between Snap Points
Snap points are clip edges, guides, markers, and zone in/out:
Alt+Right → Jump to next snap point
Alt+Left → Jump to previous snap point
Timeline Ruler
The ruler at the top shows timecodes. Right-click for:
- Add/edit guides
- Set zone in/out from here
- Add project notes
Click anywhere in the ruler → playhead jumps to that position.

Hands-On Practice
1. Open a project with a clip on the timeline (5+ minutes)
2. Practice JKL transport:
Press L → it plays
Press L again → 2x speed
Press K → stops
Press J → rewinds
Press K → stops at current position
3. Practice frame stepping:
Press Right 10 times → step forward 10 frames
Press Shift+Right → jump exactly 1 second forward
4. Set guides at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00:
Move playhead to each position → press G
5. Navigate between guides:
Press Ctrl+Right → jumps to next guide
Press Ctrl+Left → jumps back
6. Set a zone:
Press I at 0:30
Press O at 1:30
Press Ctrl+Space → only zone plays
7. Zoom to frame level:
Ctrl+Mouse Wheel to zoom way in
Press Left/Right → step frame by frame
Ctrl+Mouse Wheel to zoom back out
