Timeline Navigation

The timeline is where you spend 80% of your editing time. Master its navigation before learning to cut.

Core Idea

Fast timeline navigation = fast editing. Use keyboard shortcuts for everything. The mouse is for placing and adjusting clips — the keyboard is for moving, playing, and seeking.

K → Pause (also stops J/L speed ramp)
L → Forward (press again for faster: 1x, 2x, 4x...)

JKL is King

Learn J, K, L before anything else. Press L to play. Press K to stop. Press J to scan backward. Press L twice to play at 2x speed. This is how professional editors navigate hours of footage in minutes.

Scrolling and Panning

Horizontal scroll:
Mouse Wheel → Scroll timeline left/right
MMB (middle mouse) drag → Pan timeline continuously
Ctrl+LMB drag → Pan timeline continuously

Vertical scroll:
Shift+Mouse Wheel → Scroll tracks up/down

Zooming:
Ctrl+Mouse Wheel → Zoom in/out (centered on mouse)
Ctrl++ → Zoom in (keyboard)
Ctrl+- → Zoom out (keyboard)
Drag zoombar edges → Zoom in/out (bottom of timeline)

Zoom Levels Explained

Zoom out (wide view):
→ See entire 5-min screencast at once
→ Good for: overall structure, chapter review

Zoom in (detail view):
→ See individual frames
→ Good for: precise cut points, frame-accurate editing

Tip: Set a guide at 00:01:00 (1-minute mark) and 00:02:00 (2-minute mark) to keep your screencast within duration targets:

Move playhead to 01:00 position
Press G → adds a guide marker at 1:00
Move playhead to 02:00
Press G → adds guide at 2:00

Timeline Zone (In/Out Points)

The zone defines a range for playback, insert, or export:

I → Set Zone In (at playhead)
O → Set Zone Out (at playhead)
Shift+I → Jump to Zone In
Shift+O → Jump to Zone Out
Ctrl+Space → Play zone only (loops)
Ctrl+Shift+Space → Loop zone playback continuously
Shift+Z → Adjust zone to selected clips

Screencast use case:

1. Play your recording
2. Press I when the good section starts
3. Press O when it ends
4. Press Ctrl+Space → hear just that section
5. Press V → insert that zone into the timeline

Moving Between Guides

G → Add guide at playhead position
Ctrl+Right → Jump to next guide
Ctrl+Left → Jump to previous guide

Moving Between Snap Points

Snap points are clip edges, guides, markers, and zone in/out:

Alt+Right → Jump to next snap point
Alt+Left → Jump to previous snap point

Timeline Ruler

The ruler at the top shows timecodes. Right-click for:

  • Add/edit guides
  • Set zone in/out from here
  • Add project notes

Click anywhere in the ruler → playhead jumps to that position.
